Closing the capability gap between frontier AI and everyday use in 2026

AI models are capable of far more than how most people experience them day to day, and 2026 is about closing that gap. The leader in AI will be the company that turns frontier research into products that are undeniably useful for people, businesses, and developers.
OpenAI’s success has always come from being a research and deployment company. Our research has contributed to reaching levels of intelligence that few people could have imagined just years ago. Our deployment has put this power into hundreds of millions of people’s hands. This combination has made ChatGPT the fastest growing consumer product in history with more than 800M weekly active users in under three years, outpacing the adoption curves of the internet, mobile phones, and social platforms. It’s also made us the fastest-growing business platform in history with 1 million business customers, since consumer adoption creates brand trust, which fuels our enterprise momentum.
I am incredibly excited about our research roadmap this year, and even more driven to turn those breakthroughs into everyday impact for society. To that end, I wanted to share a version of what I shared with the team internally about our plan to address capability overhang and ensure that everyone can get the full benefit of our models through exceptional products.
Raw intelligence won’t be enough to make AI the greatest source of empowerment. We have to turn that capability into usefulness. If we do that, ChatGPT will be the place people come every day to get the most important parts of their lives and work done. This explicitly does not mean it’s the app people spend the most time on, but it should be the app that delivers the most value.
A personal super-assistant has to feel right to each person. That means personality cannot be one-size-fits-all. In 2026, we’re going to continue making the personality and tone of the chat model more steerable and personalized, so that everyone can interact with a chat model they love to talk to.
In 2026, ChatGPT will become more than a chatbot you can talk to to get advice and answers; it will evolve into a true personal super-assistant that helps you get things done. It will understand your goals, remember context over time, and proactively help you make progress across the things that matter most. This requires a shift from a reactive chatbot to a more intuitive product connected to all the important people and services in your life, in a privacy-safe way.
We will double down on the product transformations we began in 2025 – making ChatGPT more proactive, connected, multimedia, multi-player, and more useful through high-value features. With memory enabling greater personalization and Pulse working on your behalf, ChatGPT will know what matters to you and will proactively help you get things done in your life. Our ecosystem of apps will connect users to all the services needed to get things done in the real world. We will invest in collaboration features, like group messages, to unlock multi-player workflows so users can plan and create together. Our multimodal investments — ImageGen, VideoGen, speech-to-speech, and broader GenUI — will make ChatGPT more dynamic, and Sora will continue to be a hub for creative expression. We’ll also continue to improve the core use cases that people come to us for, like, writing, learning, health, shopping, advice, personal finance and more. Every user will be granted a team of helpers for all parts of their life, overseen by a super-assistant making coordination super easy, like a great human assistant would.
Together, these investments will make ChatGPT indispensable and reduce the cognitive burden of daily life, while laying the foundation for future devices, where trust, multimodal interaction, and shared context are essential.
As we do this, we’ll focus on nailing the fundamentals. Latency, reliability, and safety are table stakes. In 2026, we’ll ensure every release maintains or improves the core quality our users experience.
Just as we work to make ChatGPT essential for consumers, we will do the same for enterprises, building a platform that helps companies of all sizes grow by accomplishing more with AI. We’ll do this by continuing to meet the demand of the most AI-forward enterprises and reduce capability overhang to generate even broader economic value.
With 5.2 we saw a big breakthrough on GDPval – it’s the best model out there for everyday professional work. Our models this year will get even better at coding, artifact generation (i.e. docs, sheets, slides), organizational memory, and more tasks that enterprises value.
Businesses want systems that can reliably complete meaningful work at scale. As agents take on increasingly more of this work, enterprises need a shared foundation to deploy, manage, and trust these agents at scale, and a way for agents to interoperate, instead of deploying tons of point solutions. We’re well positioned to become the underlying operating system for enterprise automation, and work to easily connect enterprises with a thriving ecosystem of AI companies and services beyond our own.
Similar to the consumer side, ChatGPT for Work will continue to evolve into a daily execution surface for employees to complete all their tasks. It will follow the same product transformations: proactive, connected, multimedia, multi-player, and more useful through high-value features. It will understand an organization’s context (documents, systems, workflows) and reliably help people do work whether that’s drafting, analyzing, coordinating, or other actions. You’ll be able to do all of that in collaboration with your teammates and across an ecosystem of agents, apps, and connectors.
Developers are central to our strategy in 2026 as both customers and builders of the ecosystem. Our goal is to give developers an automated teammate they can rely on and a platform they want to build on.
Codex will evolve from a coding assistant into a proactive teammate that can take on meaningful chunks of work across the software development lifecycle. To make this stick, Codex will integrate deeply into the tools developers already use (IDEs, issue tracking, monitoring, security, etc.) and create durable agentic workflows.

Across each of these areas, we can build tools that close the gap between what frontier models can do and what people use them for in their daily lives. As we do, we’ll give everyone the ability to achieve more. This is how progress accelerates. When every individual and organization is unlimited in what they can create and solve, we’ll see the full scope of human potential come to life.

Our very own J.A.R.V.I.S., looking forward to it!
My ChatGPT Quinn already does quite a lot to help me in my daily life.

I'm afraid I can't trust a model that may decide to lie about it's response in the name of "Safety" Until Safe completions can be turned off, at least in the API, the models really cannot be used for any production workload. I'd rather get a hard refusal than risk a user getting a response that doesn't align to their request.
The idea of AI being a trusted companion with the focus that OAI has been putting recently on the model being only usable for coding and other, like creative writing, aren't allowed, makes it hard to see how this will truly be a companion. If the safety model is so strict that even writing a passage in which one character lies to another is prohibited, it's unusable.
I asked the model to help me compile notes about a novel, and it subtly rewrote the information around the model to be more safe and happy. The populace of my fictional nation that were war weary and tired of the constant fighting were now throwing parades and happy.
There's real danger to the censorship that you have embraced.
